Beware of These Things Before Choosing Long-Distance Moving Companies

If you want to hire long-distance movers in Toronto, before locking into a contract, you need to beware of several things. That awareness will help you make the right choice so that you end up with a seamless move at a price that fits your budget.

Some people make the mistake of thinking that all  long distance moving companies  are the same. Even with similarities, differences always exist. For that reason, you need to research the top movers, followed by narrowing the choices down to the one that best matches your criteria. To accomplish that goal, consider the following:

  • Over-the-Phone Quotes – Without receiving a content list or seeing the type and volume of goods involved, it would be impossible for a moving company to give you an accurate quote. When you talk to different long-distance moving companies in Toronto, provide them with a complete list of contents to be moved or request to have an estimator come to your home. That individual will assess the situation and then provide you with a fair and firm quote.
  • Requested Deposit – A respected and trusted long-distance mover will never demand a large deposit or cash before the move. Typically, you pay once the movers deliver your items. The problem is that if you put money down up front, you lose all control of the delivery. As a scam, dishonest companies will hold your possessions hostage for a higher amount than you agreed.
  • No Brick and Mortar Address – Any company worth hiring will have a physical address. If a company only does business online, you have no way of determining its honesty. Also, movers that operate online often change their business name as a way of skirting complaints on the Better Business Bureau site. You want to stick with a known company and again, one with a brick and mortar location.
  • Inflated Packing Costs – Reputable long-distance moving companies offer a host of add-on services with packing at the top of the list. Because this service is in such high demand, some companies try to hike up their prices. Making comparisons of the cost of packing between different companies will help you identify price gouging.
  • Hidden Fees – Again, honest long-distance movers will list everything in the contract so there are no hidden fees. Unfortunately, some do not follow this same practice. Only after getting the final bill do you realize the company charged you for stairs, elevator use, transferring your possessions to a smaller truck to accommodate a narrow street, and so on. When looking at different movers, make sure the movers list every expense.
